Where does grapefruit come from?

Though grapefruit trees can grow anywhere, it was first recorded by a Welsh explorer in 1750 on the Island of Barbados. Currently, the biggest population of grapefruit trees is in Florida. The trees were first introduced to the sunshine state from Jamaica at the beginning of the 19th century.

The first documented instance of two fruits coming together to create a grapefruit was in the 1750s. This fusion of pomelo and sweet orange was deemed quite scandalous at the time, and grapefruit became known as the 'forbidden fruit'. Owing to the numerous health benefits of grapefruit, it has become a popular breakfast fruit and is widely embraced for its natural nutrients and benefits.
