What is aloe vera?

Aloe vera is a herb that is world-renowned for its moisturising and soothing properties. That's why it's used in many botanical beauty products. Grown in abundance in tropical regions around the world, aloe vera is originally from the Arabian Peninsula.

Aloe vera is a tried and tested beauty botanical that has been used for in beauty routines for more than five thousand years. Among the first to enjoy the benefits of the herb were the Egyptians, who named it the ‘plant of immortality’ because it doesn't need soil to grow and flourish. Cleopatra, known for her ethereal beauty, is believed to have used aloe vera in her daily beauty routine. Aloe vera was used by Native Americans as well, who referred to it as ‘the wand of heaven’.

Aloe vera leaves consist of a gel-like substance, housing the plant’s bioactive compounds such as vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids. All of these natural components make aloe vera an effective remedy for burns and wounds.

The numerous benefits of aloe vera make the Herbal Essences Potent Aloe collection great for achieving smooth and shiny hair.

To ensure you get the best of nature, our supplier extracts the aloe vera gel from the plants using a patented process, which allows for a high level of polysaccharides in our aloe; polysaccharides are sugar molecules and store energy in plants. This process enables you to have high-quality aloe vera – plant power in your shower.

Where does aloe vera come from?

Aloe vera is originally from the Arabian Peninsula, but is now grown in tropical climates worldwide such as the USA, Latin America, Australia, Africa, the Caribbean, India and in Southern Europe. The coldest European countries were the last to discover the natural benefits of aloe vera since it cannot survive in extremely cold climates.

The aloe vera that we use in our products is sustainably sourced from a farm in Tamaulipas, Mexico. We've ensured that our supplier uses certified sustainable farming methods – this includes ensuring all aloe leaves are hand-picked and that the farmers only remove two to three leaves per plant at a time, resulting in 6x more aloe* in our potent aloe collection!
